Tagaung
Tagaung is a small riverside town about 70 miles north of
Mandalay. From Mandalay, you can visit by Up-stream River Cruise
Tour or by coach. Tagaung was the first capital of the ancient
Pyu civilization. Since 1990, much evidence have been discovered
on the antiquity and culture of this forgotten city. The burial
urns were found at a depth from 2.5ft to 6ft in clusters of
three, five and ten urns. Most of the urns had lids; some have shapes like Pumpkins, and
some have long neck. Almost all the urns are burnished wares,
the terracotta surfaces polished smooth. Some of urns had been
decorated with incised patterns of man, bulls, birds, sun and
flowers.
The Ayeyarwaddy Dolphins
Labine is the Myanmar word for dolphins. Ayeyarwaddy dolphins
had been the Ayeyarwaddy River for a long time. The type
specimens were first taken to England in the 1870s by a British
naturalist Mr. Anderson and classified as Ayeyarwaddy dolphins.
But even before that probable mention of these mammals were
found in Chinese texts of 1st Century AD, contemporary with the
Pyu civilization in Myanmar, about the people living along the
Banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River and that there were River Pigs in
the river. This cored be the dolphins as the flesh resembles
pork.
The interactive fishing techniques
The fishers tapped on the side of their canoes, with a wooden
mallet. As the dolphins can locate sound by Eco-location they
will be attracted to this tapping. But first they must be
convinced that the fishers are not enemies but requesting their
help to catch fish.
To do this the fishers swish their oars in the water, first
clockwise, then anti-clockwise for some time and also continued
to tap: Most of the time this will convince the dolphins but
there are times when they cannot be persuaded.
According to the fishers they can get a whole boat load of fish
with the dolphins' assistance but if they do it without their
help they get only two-three small fish for the whole day's
work.
You can find the Ayeyarwaddy dolphins between Singu, Mandalay
Division and Ma Lar village, Sagaing Division. Khu Le village is
4 miles away north of Singu. Most of fishermen can be seen at
that village. Sometimes they catch the fish with the assistance
of dolphins in the Ayeyarwaddy River.
All sightings were carefully recorded. Time of sighting,
location (whether in the lee of a sandbar or in the fast flowing
channel), condition of the sky (overcast on clean), condition of
river (choppy or calm), the conditions of the channels
(meandering or wide), the current (slow or fast). G.P.S position
etc. were all entered in a log book. Apart from that the
expedition members also participated in the interactive fishing
technique with the accompanying fishers.
